Volume 1 Issue 5
December 2005
As
the season fast approaches we have dedicated our December’s newsletter to
Christmas with a few other stories.
Enjoy!!

Christmas with Elvis at
Graceland was always something special.
For many years the tradition was to put all the decorations in place in early
December, just after Thanksgiving, and keep them up at least through Elvis'
birthday in January.
Christmas trees would be placed in several rooms along with other decorations.
Outside on the front lawn Elvis first had a large Santa, sleigh and reindeer
with the message "Merry Christmas to All, Elvis" suspended above it.
In the mid-sixties, Elvis switched to a life-size Nativity scene, along with
lighted aluminium trees along the front of the house, and the winding driveway
outlined in hundreds of blue lights, a set-up he used each year for the rest of
his life.
Also in the 1960's, Elvis started switching out the blue draperies in the front
rooms of the house to a holiday shade of red.
Today, the Graceland staff authentically continues Elvis' Christmas decorating
traditions each year - including both versions of his front lawn displays. The
lights go on the day after Thanksgiving and all the decorations, inside and
out, stay in place through the Elvis Birthday Celebration in January.

Elvis Christmas Trivia
Elvis Presley is still The King of Rock 'n Roll. Did you know he's also
"The King of Christmas Carols?" Each year, Elvis' Christmas CDs fly
off the shelves and are a popular favorite in shopping centres, restaurants and
home stereos. Between 1957 and the '70s, Elvis recorded Blue Christmas, If
Everyday Was Like Christmas, Here Comes Santa Claus, I'll Be Home For Christmas
and other classics. The spirit of Elvis has not left the
building, even if he's been gone since 1977.
The 68 comeback special was suppose to be filled with Christmas tunes but the
producer convinced Elvis to only one Christmas tune, Blue Christmas. The
smart decision re-launched Elvis's music career.
Many of the Christmas cards sent out by Elvis' label RCA, read 'Seasons
Greetings from Elvis and The Colonel.'
Red West, Elvis' long-time school buddy, bodyguard and a member of Elvis'
’gang' The Memphis Mafia, wrote the tune, If Everyday Was Like Christmas.

Gingerbread Cookies
4
1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp. ground cinnamon
2 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1 1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 large eggs
3/4 cup molasses
Tubes of white decorator's frosting
Red and green M & M's and Skittles
1. In a medium-sized bowl, sift the flour, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and baking
soda. Set aside dry ingredients.
2. In a large bowl, blend the butter and brown sugar. Add the eggs, one at a
time, and then the molasses. Slowly add the flour mixture to the molasses
mixture, stirring after each addition with the wooden spoon or mixer (the
dough should be stiff).
3. Divide the dough in half, flatten into a thick pancake (a fun step for kids
set up with a rolling pin) and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2
hours, or until the dough is firm enough to roll (if it becomes too stiff,
soften for 10 minutes at room temperature).
4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. On a floured counter, roll out the dough to
a 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out gingerbread men and a
spatula to transfer them to a greased cookie sheet, spacing them 1 inch apart.
Bake for 10 minutes, or until light brown.
5. Once the gingerbread men have cooled, invite your kids to pipe on frosting
features and clothing (they can make both boys and girls or even a whole
gingerbread family). Add red and green candies for buttons.
Makes about 25 cookies.

EPAPEI not in Christmas Parades
Unfortunately
we were unable to be participants in either Charlottetown or Souris Christmas
parades this year. Next year we are
looking forward to be participating in
both of them.

Wade Czank, President of EPAPEI recently presented $100 to Barb Dunphy-Gotell,
executive director of Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation, in support of the
QEH nursery. Money was raised at the
Movie Night, held in Vernon River by the Association.

"White Christmas," Elvis Presley (RCA)
This was never released as a single, but is notable for the fact, as reported
in Merry Christmas Baby by Dave Marsh and Steve Propes, that the composer,
Irving Berlin, took it upon himself to call radio stations across
the country and demand they not play The Pelvis' version of his treasured song.
Few people paid any attention to him although, according to the liner notes of
If Every Day Was Like Christmas, one Portland disc jockey was fired for playing
it and the whole album was banned in Canada. Elvis did release
"Blue Christmas" as a single in 1964, however, and "Merry
Christmas Baby" in
1971.
I would like to thank all
the Members for your support over the last year, and wish you and your family the best in 2006.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY
NEW YEAR!!!
from
Wade , Crissy, and Baby Leo
IF EVERYDAY WAS
LIKE CHRISTMAS
I hear the bells,
Saying, "Christmas is here."
They ring out to tell the world
That this is the season of cheer.
I hear a choir,
Singing sweetly somewhere,
And the glow, it fills my heart;
I'm at peace with the world
As the sound of their singing fills the air.
Chorus
Oh why can't every day be like Christmas?
Why can't this feeling go on endlessly?
For if everyday would be just like Christmas,
What a wonderful world this would be.
I hear a child,
Telling Santa what to bring,
And the smile on his tiny face
Is worth more to me than anything.
Chorus
Oh why can't every day be like Christmas?
Why can't this feeling go on endlessly?
For if everyday would be just like Christmas,
What a wonderful world this would be.
